  10.        Cosmo Create encompasses the functionality of the previously
  11.        released WebMagic application. This chapter lists the major
  12.        changes and additions available in Cosmo Create that were
  13.        not in the last release of WebMagic.

  16.        3.1  _M_a_j_o_r__N_e_w__F_e_a_t_u_r_e_s
  17.  
  18.           +o Port to 6.2 - You must have installed at least Irix 6.2
  19.             to install Cosmo Create.
  20.  
  21.           +o Tables - Tables are now shown WYSIWYG.  Tables will be
  22.             displayed very similarly to how they look in Netscape
  23.             Navigator, you can create tables, edit their contents,
  24.             change their attributes, etc. See Chapter 5 for
  25.             limitations.

  27.           +o Cosmo Create supports the creation and editing of
  28.             frames.
  29.  
  30.           +o Cosmo Create now allows the viewing and editing of the
  31.             raw HTML source.  Edits can be fed back into the main
  32.             document and previewed directly in a web browser.

  34.           +o Helper Applications - You can launch Photoshop, Cosmo
  35.             Worlds, Image Works, xv or enhance on the appropriate
  36.             element (an image or a VRML plug-in, for example) from
  37.             the Editors palette if you have these applications
  38.             installed on your system.  If the currently selected
  39.             inline is editable by the helper app, it will ungrey
  40.             and be active.  When the out of place edits of the
  41.             inline data are finished, the inline area in page will
  42.             update to reflect the changes.  For applications with
  43.             the appropriate conversion rules, you can launch the
  44.             out of place editor on the original content, and when
  45.             the edit completes, the data will be auto converted
  46.             back into the web-compatible format inlined into the
  47.             page. The conversion rules are specified in the
  48.             Converting panel of the Preferences panel.  Also, if
  49.             the appropriate prototype file is installed on the
  50.             system for a particular editor and converter, you can
  51.             launch it on an empty inline area to create content for
  52.             the inline area.

  54.           +o Showcase - Showcase is now available as a helper
  55.             application. A Showcase file can be drag-and-dropped
  56.             onto a page, and it will be converted into a gif and
  57.             displayed as an inline image. If the image is
  58.             highlighted on the page, then Showcase will be

  82.             either Ghostscript and eoe.sw.imagetools, or
  83.             Impressario _p_s_r_i_p be installed on the machine.
  84.             Impressario is preferred because it produces higher
  85.             quality output.

  87.           +o Button creation tool - Button Magic lets you create
  88.             nicely rendered, antialiased images of buttons with 2D
  89.             or 3D text labels for use as buttons, bullets, or
  90.             titles.  An alpha channel is used so that the buttons
  91.             blend correctly with the background. You can choose
  92.             among various shapes and fonts, and you can alter the
  93.             appearance of any button in endless combinations by
  94.             choosing lighting effects, colors, and textures.

  96.           +o Run Once - Cosmo Create uses so called "run-once with
  97.             multiple documents" behavior. If Cosmo Create is
  98.             already running on the system, attempts to run
  99.             additional copies of the program will simply open a new
  100.             editing window in the original program.  If you
  101.             explicitly need to have multiple copies of Cosmo Create
  102.             running, you can specify "-runmany" as a command-line
  103.             argument.  See the cosmocreate(1) man page for details.

  105.           +o 24-bit Imaging - Cosmo Create now defaults to using a
  106.             24-bit visual for high quality color and image display.
  107.             If a 24-bit visual is not available on the system, the
  108.             default system visual is used.

  110.           +o A Perl CGI script can be generated from the FORM
  111.             dialog. This script contains the basic boilerplate for
  112.             a CGI script and lists the form variables and values.
  113.  
  114.           +o Sweeping out and interactively resizing inlines - You
  115.             can drag out image, applet, plug-in, and whitespace
  116.             regions.  After dragging out, the inline will be
  117.             selected and the editor dialog will pop up.  At any
  118.             point, you can interactively resize any of these inline
  119.             objects.  Holding down the Shift key will constrain
  120.             their aspect ratios.

  122.           +o Improved inline attributes editor - The user can enter
  123.             an original, rich representation for an inline (such as
  124.             an rgb file), and have a web-compatible stand-in (such

  141.             type can be selected from the popup menu displaying all
  142.             the known conversions.  To disable the writing out of
  143.             width and height tags, there is a new unit type called
  144.             Unset that effectively unconstrains that dimension and
  145.             suppresses the tag on output.  This unset unit type can
  146.             also be used to reset the image to its default size, or
  147.             the Default button can be used.

  149.           +o Live plug-ins - Plug-ins display live just as they
  150.             would in Netscape, including full page plug-ins (for
  151.             Netscape 2.x).  However, full plug-in functionality is
  152.             not yet available, and so certain plug-ins may behave
  153.             poorly in Cosmo Create if the plug-ins are not written
  154.             carefully.  Live Applets are not viewable.  See Chapter
  155.             5 for more information.

  157.           +o Spell checking - Cosmo Create now offers you the
  158.             ability to spell check your documents, in a number of
  159.             languages.

  161.           +o Floating Tools - Tools can now be left floating on the
  162.             desktop after use and will continue to track the
  163.             insertion point and current selection.

  165.           +o File type rules - The FTR database is now used rather
  166.             than globbing to determine the type of files
  167.             imported/drag-n-dropped into Cosmo Create.  Also, a new
  168.             panel on the attributes dialog allows you to specify
  169.             what to do with each filetype, i.e. whether it should
  170.             be linked or inlined as an image, applet, or plug-in.

  172.           +o Link generation commands - The URL for a link can now
  173.             be generated by an external UNIX command.

  210.             now shown WYSIWYG.  Inlines can now be aligned TEXTTOP,
  211.             ABSMIDDLE and ABSBOTTOM in addition to the normal
  212.             alignment parameters.

  214.           +o Alternate HTML - Certain tags such as the APPLET tag
  215.             allow the author to specify alternate HTML, which is
  216.             now viewable through a mode switch in the View menu.

  218.           +o Scrolling Backgrounds - Background images now scroll
  219.             when you scroll the page.  Also, the background image
  220.             field has been split into two fields:  one for the
  221.             local file and one for the published URL.

  223.           +o JPEG and PNG - Cosmo Create now supports WYSIWYG
  224.             inlining of progressive JPEG and PNG images.

  227.        3.3  _H_o_t__C_o_n_t_e_n_t_:__F_e_t_c_h__P_a_g_e_s__f_r_o_m__t_h_e__W_e_b

  229.           +o This feature enables you to enter a URL into Cosmo
  230.             Create and fetch the page from the web, provided the
  231.             preferences are filled out appropriately (see "Setting
  232.             up Hot Content", below).  There are three ways to get a
  233.             URL into Cosmo Create:
  234.  
  235.               1.  Type a URL into the File->Open dialog (See
  236.                   "Browse Feature" below)
  237.  
  238.               2.  Drag a WebJumper into the File->Open dialog
  239.  
  240.               3.  Enter a URL as a command line argument
  241.  
  242.             Any of the above actions will cause Cosmo Create to
  243.             attempt to fetch the page from the web.  Press "Cancel"
  244.             in the "Progress:" dialog to stop the download.
  245.  
  246.           +o Setting up Hot Content - Cosmo Create will attempt to
  247.             acquire the network preferences from Netscape.  If your
  248.             netscape is correctly set up to get outside the
  249.             firewall, Cosmo Create should be able to do the same.
  250.             In the event that Netscape is not properly configured,
  251.             you must go to File->Preferences Proxy tab panel and
  252.             fill in the SOCKS and PROXY information accordingly.
  253.             Check with your system administrator if you are not
  254.             certain about the value of these fields.

  272.           +o Browse Feature - The File->Open dialog, as well as the
  273.             dialogs popped up from any of the "Browse" buttons, is
  274.             a mini web browser.  Entering a URL into this dialog
  275.             will cause the "Filter" button to change to say
  276.             "Follow".  Pressing the "Follow" button will cause
  277.             Cosmo Create to commence fetching the URL currently in
  278.             the text field and will display the links, and inline
  279.             objects in the file list.  To traverse another link,
  280.             select one from the list, and again, press "Follow".
  281.             Pressing OK will cause the value from the text field to
  282.             be returned to the dialog from which the browser was
  283.             popped up.  Pressing Apply in that dialog will cause
  284.             the inline image, background image, or other web
  285.             reference to be fetched into the document.

  287.           +o Saving inline images along with the HTML - Cosmo Create
  288.             allows the saving of inline images in the same
  289.             directory as the HTML for web fetched pages. To use
  290.             this feature, open the URL via any of the above
  291.             methods, modify the resultant page in some way.  When
  292.             the warning dialog pops up, make sure the checkbox for
  293.             saving inline content along with the page is checked,
  294.             then click Save to save the page.  The images will get
  295.             written into the same directory as the HTML.

  298.        3.4  _A_d_d_i_t_i_o_n_s__i_n__C_o_s_m_o__C_r_e_a_t_e__1_._0_._2

  300.           +o A "WYSIWYG Tables" item has been added to the View
  301.             menu. When this is turned off, tables are displayed
  302.             using graphical icons to represent the individual HTML
  303.             table tags, and the table itself is not drawn.  This
  304.             isn't as pretty, but it is sometimes desirable for
  305.             speed.

  307.           +o Cosmo Create 1.0.2 now provides Chinese language
  308.             support.
  309.  
  310.           +o Pressing Save in the Preferences dialog now applies the
  311.             preferences to the current editing session in addition
  312.             to saving them.

  315.             a user settable preference.
